But, my stepmother called last night to say that Dad is in the hospital.  Good.  At least there he can't drink and is getting the care he needs.  She mentioned something about his sodium levels being low (not surprising), but I'm unclear about what was the tipping point for bringing him in.  

I wonder if I can get the nurses to tell me what his blood alcohol was when they brought him in.

They probably shouldn't tell you, unless you hold a medical power of attorney, but even if they did, what would you then be able to do?

They have released information to me as back-up medical contact in the past (when I got right pushy about it). As to what I would do, I don't know. Bludgeon my father with the truth?

As you are an intelligent woman, I presume that he is an intelligent man. Therefore, he already knows the truth, and is failing to act on it for some reason(s) of his own.

"Failing to act" is nigh impossible to change from outside the person in question; they have to be willing to change, trite as it is.

1) It is good she's keeping you in the loop. He's your father, after all.

2) It is in no way Your Problem. After all, she is his wife.

3) If guilt enters the picture, repeat #2.

AMEN. Sarah...you just have to know that there is A. Nothing you can do here and B. know he's in the hospital receiving care he needs and has his wife there.

It is important that you take care of YOU. Learn that from him. Please! I send you a cyber hug or three. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night.
